Welcome to the
Kentucky Cancer Registry

In 1990, the State General Assembly passed legislation formally establishing the Kentucky Cancer Registry (KCR) as the official population-based central cancer registry for the Commonwealth. KCR is part of both the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program and the CDC's National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR).

As an active NAACCR participant, KCR serves clinicians, researchers, public health officials, and policymakers with comprehensive, high-quality cancer data across Kentucky's 120 counties.

Cancer registries are the unseen backbone of progress in the fight against cancer. Without reliable, population-based data, clinicians and researchers cannot identify where disease is concentrated, allocate resources effectively, or measure whether prevention efforts are actually working. The Kentucky Cancer Registry exists to be the eyes of that public health effort across all 120 counties of the Commonwealth.

Since joining the NCI's SEER program in 2000 — one of only seventeen such registries in the nation — KCR has pushed the boundaries of what a registry can do. Using Natural Language Processing, the registry now receives pathology reports in real time from labs across the state, meaning we often learn of a cancer diagnosis almost simultaneously with the treating physician. That capability is critical: in late-stage lung cancer, median survival is under nine months. Reaching patients quickly enough to offer clinical trial enrollment can make a meaningful difference in their lives.

Beyond individual patients, KCR functions as a virtual population-based tissue repository — tracking the location of tissue samples taken at surgery or biopsy across the state. Because this data is truly population-based, findings from individual studies can be generalized to the broader Kentucky population, dramatically elevating the science. That is what distinguishes a registry from a simple database: the ability to connect data back to the people and communities it represents.
